mGluR2

Metabotropic glutamate receptor 2

Pathway Information

Metabotropic glutamate receptor 2 (mGluR2/mGlu2) is part of a larger family of eight metabotropic receptors mGluR1-8 [1]. These eight receptors are classed generically into three groups, however the groups are not indicative of similar function (as discussed later). mGluR3 is part of "Group II" alongside mGluR3.

mGluR2, like mGluR3, controls Delay Cell Firing in the dlPFC. Group II mGluRs are primarily presynaptic autoreceptors with the function to inhibit glutamate transmission. However, both mGluR2 and mGluR3 can be found postsynaptically in regions such as dlPFC and Golgi cells respectively. mGluR3 can even be localized glially with astrocytic processes. In DLPFC, while mGluR2 is mostly located presynaptically as expected mGluR3 is mostly located here postsynaptically.

Effect On Glutamate

Compared to mGluR3, mGluR2 seems to have a stronger inhibitory effect on glutamate based on literature.
